In 1924, Arnold Schweitzer bought the Ecridor pen factory and renamed it Caran d’Ache. The name Caran d’Ache was taken by him after the pseudonym of the French satirist Emmanuel Poiré. In Russian, the word “карандаш” (which is Frenchized as “Caran d’Ache”) means pencil.
In 1929, Caran d’Ache introduced the first technical pen invented by Carl Schmid (the needle pencil we use today is a descendant of this pen). This revolutionary pen was immediately patented by Caran d’Ache.
Each of its products is handcrafted in its factory in Geneva. The Caran d’Ache Pen is a combination of the skillful hands of artisans and modern production techniques. The quality of Caran d’Ache pens can be described by the phrase “Swiss quality”.
